Organization & Layout Guidelines
At its core, a scientific poster is a visual representation of data. A viewer should be able to understand your poster in a few minutes.
Sections: Break your information down into 4 to 8 distinct sections (such as Background, Objectives, Methodology, Results, and Recommendations).
Columns: Lay out your sections in 3 or 4 columns.
Reading Order: Posters are read from left-to-right and top-to-bottom. Ensure your sections follow this natural flow (e.g., Introduction → Data → Conclusion).
Design Best Practices
Keep it Simple: Use a plain white or very subtle gradient/pattern background. Distracting backgrounds make text hard to read.
Highlight the Important Stuff: Section headings should be obvious, and the most critical research should instantly draw the eye.
Line Things Up: Try to fit everything to a basic grid. If you have a set of charts or photos, they look best when equally sized and distributed evenly.
Do Not Crowd the Canvas: Leave enough empty space so viewers can immediately identify the distinct sections without feeling overwhelmed.
Pre-Print Final Checklist
Before submitting your file for printing, perform this final 5-step check:
1. Do my poster sections flow logically? Verify your introduction, data, and conclusion follow a clear, sequential path.
2. Is all my text readable? Check that text stands out against the background, uses a legible font, is large enough to read from a reasonable distance, and is free of spelling mistakes.
3. Are all my graphics good quality? Zoom in on your file to 100% to ensure all photos, charts, and illustrations look clear and crisp. (Note: If you are ordering a poster print that is physically larger than your digital file size, zoom in even further to check for pixelation).
4. Is my data understandable? All tables, charts, and graphs should be easily understood in a few seconds.
5. Does the most important information stand out? If someone skims your poster for one minute, they should be able to fully understand the core presentation.
